16 Days in WA – Book #1

1. The Handmaid’s Tale

by Margaret Atwood

The Republic of Gilead offers Offred only one function: to breed. If she deviates, she will, like dissenters, be hanged at the wall or sent out to die slowly of radiation sickness.

But even a repressive state cannot obliterate desire – neither Offred’s nor that of the two men on which her future hangs. Brilliantly conceived and executed, this powerful evocation of twenty-first century America gives full rein to Margaret Atwood’s devastating irony, wit and astute perception.

Building awareness of gender-based violence in our community

Did you know that gender inequality is strongly linked to violence against women? Did you know that women are more likely than men to experience violence from a known person and in their home?

Gender-based violence has social, economic, health and welfare costs on children, young people, individuals, families and communities. That is why Shire of Dardanup Library Services is joining hundreds of organisations and communities for 16 Days in WA to Stop Violence Against Women.

What is 16 Days in WA?

Running from 25 November to 10 December, 16 Days in WA provides opportunities for individuals and communities to show their support for ending violence against women, including family, domestic and sexual violence. Inspired by the international 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, 16 Days in WA aims to raise awareness; increase positive actions; and highlight organisations, agencies, communities and individuals working to end violence against women.

Raising awareness in our community.

During the 16 Days in WA campaign, Shire of Dardanup Library Services will be displaying and posting information to our website about the campaign and will be featuring a book club reading list about gender based violence. We will also outline ways that you can take an active role to speak out and shine a spotlight on all forms of abuse.

If you or anyone you know is experiencing family and domestic violence and/or sexual violence, there is help available. Please call 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732) or visit our support page for more information.
